Walk for a better life

Walk for a better life

The Lawrence S. Ting Charity Walk – one of Vietnam’s biggest charitable events – will return to Ho Chi Minh City in January 2014.

The event first started in 2006 in memory of Mr. Lawrence S. Ting, founder of Phu My Hung Development Corporation – developer of the iconic Phu My Hung City Center in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 7.

The 2014 walk will take place on January 11 at The Crescent.  As usual, all money raised from this event will be donated the poor in nearby districts, the HTV’s Charity Fund and the Supporting Fund for Sports Talents.

The Lawrence S. Ting Charity Walk has become a community event for locals and expats of various ages, including children.

The walk is annually organised just before Tet in order to help the poor have a warmer Tet.

According to statistics, by the end of 2012 Ho Chi Minh City had nearly 39,000 poor households by the city standard, accounting for 2.12% of population, and more than 99 000 households classified as close to poor, accounting for 5.44%. There are still many people living in substandard houses or along canals in Phu My Hung’s neighbouring districts such as districts 7, 8, Binh Chanh and Nha Be who have to struggle to afford food and need support from community.

In 2013, Lawrence S. Ting Charity Walk raised nearly VND2.47 billion ($120,000) for the poor and the Organizers hope that this year’s walk will continue to be a great success.
