The Lawrence S. Ting Memorial Fund has awarded 395 scholarships worth VND 3.4 billion (US$151,000) in total to outstanding students who recorded high results in schools and universities nationwide.
The scholarships were presented at a ceremony held in Ho Chi Minh City on September 26 to celebrate the fund’s 10th founding anniversary.
On the occasion, the fund announced that it would donate VND 5.06 billion (US$225,000) of charity funds to charity associations as well as towards study encouragement programmes throughout the country in 2016.
At the ceremony, the fund received the Labour order, third class, in recognition of its contributions to ensuring social welfare, particularly in the two fields of education and healthcare, in Vietnam.
Addressing the ceremony, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Home Affairs, Tran Van Lam praised the support of the Lawrence S. Ting Memorial Fund, which has provided positive and fitting support for children in need, thus nurturing their talent as well as their good will so that they may share their talents with the community in the future.
Director of the Fund, Phan Chanh Dung reaffirmed that the fund would continue creating favourable conditions for poor students in their study and help them gain success in life.
Established in 2005, the fund has sponsored over VND 225 billion (US$10 million) to the education and healthcare sector as well as to community-support activities in Vietnam.
The money has been used to grant scholarships to outstanding students, purchase computers for schools in remote areas as well as medical equipment for hospitals and medical stations, present wheelchairs to people with disabilities, and provide cleft palate surgeries for thousands of children.
