14th Annual Terry Fox Run in Ho Chi Minh City
The Canadian International School, in cooperation with the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and the Consulate General of Canada, is pleased to announce that the 14th Annual Terry Fox Run will take place at the Crescent Plaza, Phu My Hung, Saigon South, District 7, (nearby Paragon and Unilever building) on Sunday, November 28, 2010.
People should arrive at 7 a. m. for pre-run activities. The run will start at 8 a.m.
The Terry Fox Run is a fun-filled family event. Everyone can participate in this 5 km, non-competitive run/walk and join in the party and picnic afterwards. The Ten Dollar Bill Band will be there to stir things up and get people dancing and singing.
All proceeds of the event are contributed to cancer research. Last year in Ho Chi Minh City, more than 7,500 people registered for the run and raised 730,000,000 VND.
The story of Terry Fox
The Terry Fox Run, named in honor of Canadian amputee runner who at 21, attempted to run across Canada for cancer research, is no longer just a Canadian tradition. Countries around the world stage annual events in support of Terry’s dream finding a cure for cancer. Terry Fox had to have his leg amputated above the knee at the age of 18 because of cancer. While in hospital, Terry was affected by the suffering of other cancer patients, many of them young children. He decided to run across Canada to increase awareness of cancer and raise money for cancer research. During his Marathon of Hope he ran over 5,300 kilometers – the equivalent of a marathon a day for 143 days. Sadly, his cancer returned and he did not make it all the way. His example captured the imagination of Canada and the world.
The run is organized by the Consulate General of Canada, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and Canadian International School, with support from the Canadian business community, schools and universities and friends of Canada in Ho Chi Minh City.
