City to build tunnel to ease congestion

The HCMC government has approved a project to build an overpass and a tunnel at Nguyen Van Linh-Nguyen Huu Tho Intersection in District 7 to cope with chronic traffic congestion at the southern gateway to the city.

The HCMC Department of Transport said the overpass and tunnel project will be implemented in two phases with the tunnel under Nguyen Van Linh Parkway and a system of signal lights planned for the first phase. The remaining components of the project and expansion of Nguyen Huu Tho Street will be implemented in phase two.

Traffic jams often occur at the intersection due to heavy traffic on the streets. Nguyen Huu Tho Street leads to the ports in Hiep Phuoc Industrial Park while Nguyen Van Linh Parkway links National Highway 1A and Tan Thuan Export Processing Zone.

The municipal government has assigned Tan Thuan Industrial Promotion Company Limited (IPC) to work with Phu My Hung Development Corporation over a plan to execute the project under the build-transfer (BT) format. The capital for the project will be repaid by the city government by an area of 240 hectares in Phuoc Kieng Commune of Nha Be District.

Earlier, the transport department sent the city government a plan for a transport infrastructure project at Nguyen Van Linh-Nguyen Huu Tho Intersection with a total cost of VND2.62 trillion.

The project comprises a 60-meter-diameter central circular island, two tunnels and auxiliary works on Nguyen Van Linh in the first phase with capital amounting to nearly VND840 billion. In the later stage, construction of two overpasses and two tunnels would be carried out at a cost of VND1.78 trillion, including VND1 trillion for site clearance.

To solve traffic congestion at the city’s gateways, the department will map out plans to build overpasses and tunnels including at Thu Duc and My Thuy intersections.
