Phu My Hung and Lawrence S. Ting Fund award scholarships to outstanding students


Some 375 outstanding students nation-wide last week received scholarships awarded by Phu My Hung Development Corporation and Lawrence S. Ting Memorial Fund (Lawrence S. Ting Fund).

This is the 15th time that Lawrence S. Ting Fund’s scholarship awards have been organised since its establishment 12 years ago.

The scholarships this time, which worth nearly VND 8.5 billion, were sent to students in high schools, colleges and universities who have outstanding study results and strongly joined in social activities. Many of them are living in disadvantage conditions.

On the same day, Phu My Hung Development Corporation awarded over VND 5 billion to the National Fund for Vietnamese Children, HCM City Fund for the Poor, Vu A Dinh Fund, HCM City Sponsoring Association for Poor Patients, Sponsoring Association for the Disabled and Orphans in HCM City, and associations for learning promotion in 63 provinces and cities.

Up to date, Phu My Hung Development Corporation and Lawrence S. Ting Fund have awarded over 90,119 scholarships, totally valued at VND 96.3 billion.

“The biggest happiness that the fund has gained is the fact that students that have already received our scholarships have graduated and gotten jobs as well as been successful,” said Phan Chanh Duong, Director of the fund.

“These students have put their belief to the fund and have donated to the fund in order to assist other younger children as well as to encourage disabled people.

This is a positive signal which gives us more energy to keep developing our fund and welfare activities,” he said.

Along with scholarship awarding, Lawrence S. Ting Fund, from July 2006, has carried out a programme called “Moving Forward with IT” in which they have delivered equipment to support IT teaching and learning in Viet Nam.

In the first phase, the fund with the support from Phu My Hung Development Corporation has set up 122 computer rooms with internet service in 96 schools in 63 provinces and cities. The total capital for this phrase is VND 37.3 billion.

From 2009, the programme has co-operated with the Ministry of Education and Training to organise a contest called “E – Learning lessons”.

Previously in Ha Noi, the ministry has organised the wrapping-up and awarding ceremony of the 4th “E – Learning lessons” contest.

The contest had received over 12,000 submissions, strongly up by four times over previous contests. From this contest, about 5,000 valuable e-lessons were uploaded to MOET network at https://elearning.moet.edu.vn so that teachers in the whole country could have reference.

In addition, the fun has tied-up with the Faculty of Electronics and Telecommunication of HCMC University of Science to fund VND 1.9 billion to set up 604 connector kits including microscopes and computers to schools and hospitals nation-wide.

Along with that the fund poured VND 2.6 billion to support education sector in provinces including Ca Mau, Ben Tre, Tra Vinh, Ha Tinh, Thai Binh and Quang Ninh to upgrade their facilities.

During its 12 years of operation, Lawrence S. Ting Fund has always focused on education and healthcare sectors. These scholarships have contributed to the training and development of young human resources in order to build a stronger and more developed country. Besides, programs in support of the healthcare sector, the community, especially the wheelchair program, have alleviated the pain of illness, unfortunate incidents helping people with disabilities find hope in life again.

So far, the fund has delivered its supports in many fields including education, health-care and social support activities. The total sponsor during this period is VND 271 billion.

Of them, over VND 149 billion is poured to education; VND 41 billion is for education and VND 80.7 billion is for other social support activities like presenting wheelchairs to disadvantaged people or giving free operation for children; supporting people affected by natural disasters and supporting poor people at Lunar New Year.

Lawrence S. Ting Fund welcomes all donations from organisations, companies, individuals in many fields of education, healthcare, especially the program of presenting wheelchairs to people with disabilities.
